It was in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik that it all began for Bjarki Mar Elisson. After finding his feet in handball at various clubs in his hometown, it was ultimately less than a hundred kilometres away in Selfoss that he made his professional debut in 2008. After one season, Bjarki Elisson decided to really kick-start his career with a move to HK Kopavogur. Signing ias a 19-year-old, he gained experience and maturity over the following four seasons before making the move to the world’s top league, the Bundesliga.
It was ThSV Eisenach who decided to put their faith in the young Icelander. Having only just been promoted to the top flight of German handball, the Thuringia-based side nevertheless a difficult season and were immediately relegated back to the second division. This did nothing to discourage Bjarki, who established himself as his team's driving force. Unstoppable on the left wing, he finished as the league’s top scorer, finding the net 289 times to help his team secure promotion back to the Bundesliga.
Although the Icelandic international made his return to the top flight, he did not continue his career in the blue and white colours. Following a historic campaign in the second tier, he was snaffled up by Füchse Berlin. This was a real step up for the Reykjavik native. Having recently been crowned continental champions for the first time in their history by winning the EHF Cup, the Foxes went on to compete in the 2015 IHF Super Globe.
Despite the Germans’ status as newcomers, Bjarki Elisson made history for his new club straight away by defeating Veszprém in the final (28–27 after extra time), having already pulled off a stunning victory against Barcelona in the semis (26–25). The Icelander and his club were on top of the world, and they remained there the following year too. This was a particularly bitter memory for all Parisian supporters, as it was in a nail-biter against the capital club that Berlin retained their title (29–28). Two years later, they added the EHF Cup to their honours list after defeating Saint-Raphaël in the final (28–25).
After four seasons of loyal service, Elisson joined TBV Lemgo in 2019. At the North Rhine-Westphalian club, the left winger arrived as a leader and immediately became an integral member of the squad. In his very first season, he made a huge impression by finishing as the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 216 goals. That same season, he helped the club win the fourth German Cup in its history after knocking out Kiel (29–28) and then Melsungen (28–24) in the Final4.
During his third and final season at TBV’s Lipperlandhalle, he was the squad’s creative leader in the EHF European League, finishing sixth in the scoring standings (98 goals) despite an early exit in the round of 16 against Wisla Plock.
This ninth season in the Bundesliga was his last, as Veszprém lured the Icelander away for the 2022–2023 season onwards. So, at the age of 32, Bjarki Elisson made his debut in the EHF Champions League. Having won the Hungarian league title in each of his four seasons at the club, the Icelandic player got to experience a whole new level of competition, notably facing Paris Saint-Germain on six occasions.
Over the years, his honours list has grown to include three Hungarian Cups (2023, 2024, 2026), as well as gold in the SEHA League – a continental competition bringing together teams from Central and Eastern Europe, the most recent edition of which took place in 2022 and saw Veszprém beat Zagreb in the final.
At the age of 36, Bjarki Elisson is therefore set to write a new chapter in his career by moving to a fourth country – following his native Iceland, Germany and Hungary – with the same ambition he had when he started out: to win as many titles as possible.
