Paulo César: "Can't wait to start work"

Women's football
Having just been appointed coach of the Paris Saint-Germain women's team, Paulo César, a former capital club player (2002-2007), gave his initial impressions and revealed his objectives - as well as the playing philosophy he hopes to put in place.

Paulo, or should I say Coach ? How do you feel about officially being appointed coach of PSG's women's team?

"I'm very happy and proud to be appointed coach of the Paris Saint-Germain women's team. I can't wait to start work in this new role! There's a lot of continuity compared to the end of last season. Everything went very well with the players, particularly on a human level. It's still going to take time to fully implement what we want. But there was a very sincere relationship between the players and myself, and I hope to be able to maintain that."

There's also continuity around the fact that you were coach of the U19 team, who were crowned French champions last season. How would you sum up last season?

"It was a very positive year, with a great deal of tactical development, as well as changes in the individual players and their mentality. They gave their all every day, every training session and every match. They were a very strong team in every respect, and they were crowned champions of France after a superb run. I'm very proud to have been crowned French U19 champions!"

As a former Paris Saint-Germain player, you must have really enjoyed that. What was it like sitting on the bench at the Parc des Princes at the end of last season as you faced PFC in the Play-offs?

"These are emotions that we can't explain! To be able to coach a PSG pro team at the Parc des Princes, after having been a Paris Saint-Germain player, is something exceptional. It was an incredible opportunity. But the most important thing was the result. And the fact that everyone was there, the players, the fans... I'm so proud to have experienced that moment."

What values would you like to pass on to the players?

"The collective is the primary value; the team is the most important thing. The team will be the driving force behind this project. And I'm Brazilian, so I like creative play, and I'm going to set up a project that has this dual culture. The French tactical rigour, and then the creative aspect - going over and above your role - that I learnt in Brazil... I'm trying to bring the two aspects together so that everything goes well, and so far, everything has always gone well!"

What goals have you set for the group?

"The aim is to win. That's in the DNA of Paris Saint-Germain. We're going to try to be competitive, to have a squad that tries to play attractive football, with a lot of enthusiasm and determination. And with the desire to win titles!"
