Still just two points clear with five rounds remaining, Paris have their fate in their own hands as they enter the final sprint of the season. Second-placed Nantes are not letting up, and the race promises to be frantic right to the end. Against this backdrop, Les Rouge et Bleu have no choice but to win every match, regardless of the results of their pursuers.
At Coubertin, the capital club must continue their perfect home record against Chartres, who are fighting for survival and need points to give themselves some breathing space. No match will be easy for Stefan Madsen's men, who must keep up the pace ahead of a potentially decisive clash with Nantes at the AccorArena on 27 May. Every point will be precious if they are to win another title on the national stage.
While Paris are looking upwards, the situation is very different at Chartres, who are fighting hard for their top-flight survival. They lost a crucial match against Dijon last weekend (23-28), and are now just one point clear of the drop zone. With four defeats in their last five matches, the momentum is not in the favour of Arnaud Calbry's side.
Chartres are still capable of pulling off surprises, like their 33-32 victory over Toulouse a few weeks ago, and above all they have every intention of doing everything in their power to stay in the Liqui Moly StarLigue for an eighth consecutive season. The final sprint has also begun at the bottom of the table, and Chartres are counting on their recent success to win the battle.
After a summer marked by a number of changes, Chartres have often been handicapped by a lack of attacking efficiency. However, the fans can always count on their last line of defence. Milan Bomastar is the seventh-highest save-maker in the Liqui Moly StarLigue this season (202), and has often saved his team in difficult situations.
Last October, the Serbian keeper was unable to prevent his side's 26-34 defeat by the Parisians at the Colisée, but he did prevent a bigger deficit by making no fewer than 16 saves. Chartres will be counting on another outstanding performance from Bomastar if they are to make an impact in the capital.
As the match against Nantes will be played at the AccorArena at the end of May, this game against Chartres will be the penultimate of the season at Coubertin. Les Rouge et Bleu have won all their home matches in the league so far, and they will be keen to continue this fine run against a lowly ranked opponent. Stefan Madsen's men will need the support of the capital's fans if they are to continue on their way to the title.
Chartres' rivals in the relegation battle will all be in action before the Paris clash, starting with Istres, who travel to Cesson-Rennes on Thursday 30 April. The following day, Dijon, Dunkerque and Sélestat play host to Montpellier, Saint-Raphaël and Nîmes respectively, in an exciting battle at distance between three of the bottom five in the standings.
Limoges, keen to hold on to fourth place, take on an Aix side who have fallen out of the European reckoning. Fifth-placed Chambéry, five points clear of Saint-Raphaël, will be looking to grow that gap - but will have to pull off a real upset in Nantes - a side still unbeaten in the league this season and determined to close the gap on the Parisian leaders - on Sunday.
