Born in Guadeloupe, Mathis Jangeal grew up in the Caribbean. In 2019, at the age of 11, he joined the PSG Academy Martinique for two seasons. Spotted by the PSG Youth Academy’s technical team, he was invited in February 2021 to take part in trials at Paris Saint-Germain’s Pre-Academy Centre. After making a strong impression, he was officially signed later that year. He continued his development at the club by joining the Youth Academy, where he excelled in the U17 and then U19 age groups.
After several days of training with the first team squad, Mathis was called up by Luis Enrique for the Ligue 1 McDonald’s home match against Auxerre. A versatile midfielder combining power, technique and drive, his debut marked an important step in his development.
“I’m really happy to have been able to make my debut with my boyhood club, to come on like that at the Parc des Princes. It’s a day that will remain forever engraved in my memory,” he told PSG TV. “Seeing Quentin come on gave me confidence. I was able to see how the game was unfolding. When I came on, I made the most of it and gave my all. What impressed me the most? The intensity and the physicality of the players. It’s a big change from our usual matches.”
This first appearance in Ligue 1 also marks a major milestone for Paris Saint-Germain’s international academies. It was praised by Benjamin Houri, Technical Director of the PSG Academy: “It’s an immense source of pride to see Mathis Jangeal play his first professional minutes at the Parc des Princes. For the first time, a player from the PSG Academy has featured for our men’s first team. This proves that our methodology, which is identical to that of the youth academy, works perfectly. And thanks to the dedication of our coaches around the world, I’m convinced this is only the beginning and that more success stories will follow.”
Mathis Jangeal’s call-up to the first team highlights the high-quality work carried out at by the PSG Academy Martinique, which helps guide young talents toward the elite level. His time at the academy was a key step in his development, instilling discipline, rigour and strong technical foundations that enabled him to reach his full potential.
