Kiedrzynek (Szperkowska, 45’), Isabela (Le Guilly, 45’), Samoura, Mbock, Elimbi Gilbert, Echeginin, Osteras, Jourde (Groenen, 45’), Karchaoui, Lafontaine (Morissaint, 57’), Feller.
A top-of-the-table clash awaited the crowd at the Parc des Princes on Saturday evening in the Arkema Première Ligue. Following two convincing victories against OH Leuven (5–0) in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and then Fleury (3–1), Paris Saint-Germain’s Women’s team faced OL Lyonnes in a spectacular showdown between the two leading sides in the league. The two historic rivals set the tone from the outset, engaging in a fierce battle in midfield, with relentless intensity in every challenge.
Although the Parisian players made their intentions clear by initially pressing high up the pitch, Lyon’s first attacking move unfortunately proved decisive. Receiving a cross from Selma Bacha, Melchie Dumornay guided a downward header into the net to open the scoring (0–1, 3’). Despite this cruel turn of events, Paulo César’s players stuck to their game plan: remaining defensively compact to close down space and committing numbers forward when winning back possession.
After a difficult spell, during which Lyon launched several attacks on Katarzyna Kiedrzynek’s goal, Les Rouge et Bleu stepped up the pace around the half-hour mark, inspired by Naomie Feller, whose curling effort narrowly missed the target (31’). During this spell of pressure, Sakina Karchaoui produced a moment of class down the right flank before cutting inside, but her shot was blocked at the last moment (34’). Their lack of finishing luck contrasted sharply with the clinical edge of the visitors, led by a familiar face...
Having already threatened with a volley that went wide (36’), Marie-Antoinette Katoto doubled Lyon’s lead with a powerful header just before half-time (0–2, 39’). Moments later, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek deniedy Paralluelo just before the break, bringing an end to an intense and closely contested first half (45’).
The Parisian side returned for the second half with a heavily reshuffled starting eleven, particularly in defence. After picking up an injury in a collision, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek was replaced by Oliwia Szperkowska, while Jade Le Guilly came on for Isabela. Jackie Groenen was also introduced to inject energy into midfield. Unfortunately, just as in the first half, Lyon stunned Les Rouge et Bleu with their very first attack, once again benefiting from a slice of luck... Vicki Becho scored the third goal with a deflected shot (0–3, 48’).
It was an immensely frustrating turn of events for Paulo César’s players, who were punished at crucial moments in the match. Despite the circumstances, the Parisian side continued to fight hard in front of their exemplary supporters, but confidence was firmly with the visitors. Following a scramble after a free-kick taken by Selma Bacha and deflected by Wendie Renard, Salma Paralluelo also found the back of the net (0–4, 59’).
The game became increasingly stretched during the final half-hour as fatigue began to take its toll. Undeterred, Les Rouge et Bleu continued to combine in search of a breakthrough, but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
After an unbeaten run, Paris Saint-Germain’s women’s team suffered their first defeat of the Arkema Première Ligue season. However, Paulo César’s players will soon turn their attention back to the competition, with Montpellier HSC visiting on Friday 23 October, followed six days later by a mouth-watering UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against Manchester City. The dates are set.
Naomie Feller gave it everything she had! Facing a club she had represented earlier in her career, the French international embodied the Parisian side’s resilience on a difficult evening. With her bursts of pace and attacking initiative down the left flank, she provided a spark for her teammates, leading the fightback while also showing great commitment in tracking back defensively. A promising performance to build on for the future.
