The Mexicans quickly hit their stride and opened the scoring through Quiñonez with a powerful strike off the underside of the bar (1–0, 22'). Barely ten minutes later, La Tri doubled their lead through Jiménez, who put his side firmly in the driver's seat (2–0, 31').
Pacho and his team tried to fight back in the second half but were unable to turn the tide, meaning Ecuador’s run came to an end in the round of 16.
