The Euro 2028 qualifying campaign, which will take place in Spain, Portugal and Switzerland, kicked off on Wednesday 4 November, with two Parisian players in action. Having won bronze at the 2026 tournament, Croatia were expected to deliver in front of their home crowd on Wednesday. Dagur Sigurdsson’s side rose to the occasion in Split, putting on a show and securing an historic victory to boost their confidence.
With 46 goals scored, including two by Mateo Maras, they broke their own record for goals scored in a Euro qualifier. This victory immediately puts Croatia top of Group 1, ahead of the match between Finaland and Luc Steins’ Netherlands on Thursday evening. On Sunday, the reigning World Championship runners-up will travel to Vantaa to try to build on their good form and take a solid step towards qualifying for the finals.
Having finished fourth at Euro 2026 in January, Iceland have high hopes for their upcoming international competitions. Knocked out in the group stage of the last four World Cups, the small island nation will be aiming to reach the knockout stages at the World Cup in Germany next January. Before that, Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson’s men must focus on this qualifying campaign in the hope of securing their place in the finals in what appears to be a manageable group featuring Serbia, Estonia and Ukraine.
It was against the latter that Iceland, like Croatia, secured an historic victory on Wednesday. Spurred on by a brilliant Bjarki Elisson (6 from 6), Iceland also broke their record for goals scored in a European qualifier as Ukraine struggled to find solutions (48–26). On Sunday, the Icelanders will travel to the Estonian capital of Tallinn looking to maintain their perfect record.
