You have to have a strong heart as a Paris Saint-Germain supporter at the start of this season! Just as they did against Rennes in the opening match of the league season, the club from the capital managed to come back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw. This time, it was even more dramatic, as both of Paris’s goals came in stoppage time, with Vitinha scoring in the 91st minute and Marquinhos in the 95th.
This is only the second time in the last 60 Ligue 1 seasons that a team has avoided defeat after trailing by two goals going into stoppage time, following OGC Nice’s 2-2 draw against Olympique Lyonnais on 3 April 2011. Paris have therefore avoided defeat despite being two goals down in each of their first two Ligue 1 matches of the season, matching the number of times they had done so in the previous 17 occasions when the club from the capital had fallen 2-0 behind in the league.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder made his 100th Ligue 1 appearance for the club from the capital at Pierre-Mauroy, a competition the 2026 world champion particularly enjoys, having been crowned French champion every year since joining the club (in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026). During that period, he has scored 9 goals and provided 16 assists in the competition. He is also Ligue 1’s second-highest assist provider since his arrival, behind Adrien Thomasson (26 assists). A testament to his refusal to accept defeat, he holds the record for the most consecutive Ligue 1 matches without a loss. The 2026 world champion even went unbeaten in the French league between May 2023 and April 2025: that’s 51 consecutive matches (40 wins and 11 draws)!
Coming on in the 72nd minute for Paris’s number 8, Red and Blue defender Lucas Digne officially made his Ligue 1 comeback on the pitch of his former club. Also joining the club this summer and coming off the bench on Friday, his teammate Mika Godts provided his first assist for Paris’s opening goal. The Dutchman also played a part in the equaliser just before the final whistle.
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha produced two further moments of world-class quality: a stunning strike into the top corner to reduce the deficit, followed by a perfectly weighted cross for his captain to equalise. The Portuguese midfielder scored his first goal and provided his first assist of the season, taking his tally to 15 goals and… 15 assists in Ligue 1 since arriving in France.
Scoring deep into stoppage time, Marquinhos also opened his Ligue 1 account for the season. The Brazilian has now scored 27 league goals, and… 44 in all competitions since making his debut in France. Two goals in the money time, and momentum to carry forward this Friday 4 September and Matchday 3 of Ligue 1, when Luis Enrique and his players host AS Monaco for their first home match of the season. Kick-off is at 21:05 at the Parc des Princes!
