Yahia Omar's Egypt off to a perfect start in the African Men's Handball Championship

The African Men's Handball Championship began on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, in Rwanda. Three-time defending champions Egypt easily defeated Gabon (36-25) in their first match of the competition, played in Kigali.

Partially rested by his coach Juan Carlos Pastor, Yahia Omar still managed to score one goal (from three attempts) during the match. Egypt got off to a flying start in the competition and will have the opportunity to confirm their form against Angola, before finishing their preliminary round against Uganda on 24 January. If they qualify, the reigning African champions will compete in the main round from 25 to 27 January, before the semi-finals and final on 27 and 29 January.
