Rangers 1-0 PSG

Match Report | 2009-08-01 | 17:24

PSG suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Glasgow Rangers in their opening match of the Emirates Cup. Bougherra netted the only goal of the game with a header in the 77th minute.

Antoine Kombouaré decided to send out two mixed starting XIs in the London-based Tournament – the last outing for the Parisian side ahead of the start of the Ligue 1 season. After a very moving one minute silence in the memory of Bobby Robson, the two teams began the match in nervous fashion.

Supported by a big colony of travelling fans, the Rangers players spent the first part of the match getting a close up version of Mevlut Erding. He got on the end of a Maurice cross for his first chance and put it just wide of Alexander’s goal (32’). He fired off another shot (33’) and had another great chance when he was released by Rothen (36’). Moments before the half-time break he saw his chip land on the roof of the net after a wonderful Makelele place (39’).

In the second half, the Scottish looked a changed side and forced the Parisians onto the back foot. Makelele denied Mendes (64’), the Man of the Match, and Coupet stopped Boyd (66’). Called upon more and more, the PSG defence finally cracked from a set piece. From a corner, Bougherra got the better o f Sankharé and nodded the ball home over the Makelele on the line (1-0, 77’). Unstoppable! Brilliantly set-up by Rothen, Maurice thought he fired home an equaliser as his volley flashed passed the base of the upright (90’).

PSG will be back on the pitch at Emirates Stadium on Sunday at 15:00 to take on Atletico Madrid.
