Out of contract at Valenciennes, Willy Grondin signed a 12-month contract to become PSG's third-choice 'keeper and immediately joined up with his new teammates at Port Crouesty.
"I was out of contract at Valenciennes and I was contacted by the coach Antoine Kombouaré who asked if I wanted to be third 'keeper at PSG. Obviously I accepted and I'm very happy to be here. I'm also delighted to be able to work with a 'keeper as nice as Greg Coupet."
Antoine Kombouaré (PSG coach)
"I wanted to him to sign because anything can happen and I believe all three 'keepers are important. Someone can get injured at any moment and the third-choice 'keeper can suddenly be called into action. Willy Grondin will be behind the no.2 Edel and Coupet, the number one. He is good enough to be a 'keeper in Ligue 2 and a perfect Ligue 1 understudy. He's very happy to have come here as third-choice. He will play with the reserves on the weekend to try and help the young players evolve."
| The 34-year-old French 'keeper, Willy Grondin is a Nantes youth product and he spent much of his professional career with Les Canaris. He spent one season on loan at Le Mans before joining Antoine Kombouaré at Valenciennes in 2005. French champion alongside Mickaël Landreau in 2001, he even played a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. He was crowned Ligue 2 champion with VA in 2006. This vastly experienced 'keeper becomes PSG's third-choice keeper behind Grégory Coupet and Apoula Edel. |
