Chantôme: ‘We need the points’

Interview | 2010-02-17 | 18:53

PSG midfielder Clément Chantôme talks about the club’s current situation as well as the capital club’s next opponents Toulouse...

Clément, how was training today?
“It went well. The Orange bibs won 4-0! It was a huge training session, really intense. We played 11 v. 11 against a side who play like Toulouse to get used to their style.”

What do you think of this Toulouse side?
“They’re a pretty tough side and their game is founded on a big defence. They never give the opposition a second on the ball so we’re going to have to be right on top of our game. If we manage to control the ball, we should be able to carve out some scoring chances. On the other hand, if we get caught playing their football and overdoing the long-balls, and try and take them on physically, we could find ourselves in trouble. That’s their biggest strength. We have to play quick and show plenty of concentration and motivation. We need the points so it’s a very important match.”

André-Pierre Gignac is missing for Toulouse. Could that be a decisive factor?
“I think so. We brings a huge amount to their team and can get in behind a defence. We’ll still have to look after the player that replaces him, but Gignac is their biggest attacking weapon and without him, it won’t be as easy for them.”

PSG hasn’t beaten Toulouse at the Parc des Princes since August 2005. How can you stop this run?
“We need to be solid in the challenge, get forward and try everything. We’re in a tough situation at the moment. We have to show some real desire and by doing that, things will turn in our favour. And we have to put them away because we’ve struggled in that department at the Parc recently.”

What are the reasons behind the side’s recent bad run?
“We haven’t performed in the big matches this season, we haven’t taken our chances and we’ve conceded goals towards the end of games that has cost us dearly. It’s a mental problem for the whole squad and we’re struggling to get going again. We’ve spoken about it and are trying to start over. Against Nancy (0-0), we played well, as a team and didn’t give them many chances to score. We have to build on that performance now and things will improve.”
