Kombouaré: 'Lift our heads'

Coach's Conference | 2010-01-15 | 17:00

PSG coach Antoine Kombouaré talks about his side's 1-0 French Cup loss to Guingamp and looks ahead to the return to league action on Saturday away to Lille , who have won their last six consecutive Ligue 1 matches.

Coach, what's the feeling after the loss to Guingamp?
"Disappointment. It was a hard result on us because we played well. We created a lot of good chances. We didn't score and we gave them the only goal of the game. Now, we have to lift our heads. I'm expecting a reaction from my players. We need to bounce back. The first league match of 2010 is coming and I hope we make a good fist of it. It's going to take a great PSG because we're taking on the best team in Ligue 1 on current form."

Do you regret the choices you made in that match?
"I never regret my chances. This is my job. The players have to stand up and be counted out on the pitch. No player can play every single match. I try and put the best possible team out on the pitch with the best balance. It didn't work against Guingamp but the important thing now is to get straight back in the saddle. That means a huge game on Saturday. That's what I'm expecting from my players."

Do you feel that Mamadou Sakho has been affected by his own goal?
"The whole team was affected. Mamadou more than the others because he felt it was his fault. A career is full of defeats and sometimes, they're defeats that stay with you. That's all part of the learning curve. The strength of really great players is their ability to bounce back. We're there to support them. The important thing, is to have the ability to rise above it. For him and all the others."

Are you optimistic?
"Luckily I am an optimist! I am because I know we have the ability to cause Lille problems. They'll be looking for revenge after the 3-0 loss at the Parc des Princes in Week 4 and they'll be favourites because they're above us on the ladder. We want to knock them off. Their current run is very impressive. They crush everyone in their path. They have won their last six Ligue 1 matches, scoring 23 goals in the process and conceding three. That's the stuff dreams are made of. We have to treat this like the most important game of the season and not worry about anything other the Saturday's game."

How is Guillaume Hoarau's return to action coming?
"I had a chat with him. He hasn't played in three months. That's a problem. I'd like him to play with the reserves first, but unfortunately, there's no game this weekend."
