Coupet: 'It's been fantastic'

Interview | 2009-11-30 | 18:27

PSG 'keeper Grégory Coupet talks about his injury and also the messages of support he has received...

Greg, you're looking good for someone who has just gotten out of hospital...
"It's all going really, really well! I was lucky enough to be looked after by PSG doctor Eric Rolland who put my ankle back in place on the pitch. He operated on me at three o'clock in the morning. It was good coming out of the anaesthetic. I've got a broken ankle. Now I've got six weeks rest, without any weight-bearing on the foot before starting my rehabilitation. I hope everything goes well."

What happened?
"I saw the ball heading out for a corner. I wanted to prevent the corner at all costs and threw myself at the ball. My studs stuck in the pitch. I felt the break, but didn't really feel any more pain than that. It was when I saw my leg that I realised what had happened. I held my leg and told myself I mustn't move. That's when the Doc arrived and he was incredible. As soon as he got there, he just put the ankle back in place. Then he told me the worst was over. I suddenly felt hugely relieved and can't really say that I was in any more pain. The replays are terrible. I though I had a compound fracture, but in fact, the ankle was just out of place."

You were sidelined for a big part of your final season at Lyon... are you ready to do that all again?
"The injury doesn't worry me. The main thing was to get a diagnostic as soon as possible. That was down thanks to the doc. The rehabilitation doesn't scare me. I'm not worried about that."

How did you feel when the Parc des Princes chanted your name as you were carried off?
"It was extraordinary. I honestly heard the supporters' chants and it was really great. I also got a lot of get well text messages, friends came to the hospital, members of the PSG board. It's been really fantastic."

Edel is going to take your place in the PSG goal. What can you tell us about him?
"His time has come. He works really well at training. He's a good 'keeper and has exactly what it takes to fill my gloves. Against Auxerre, he made two good saves. Come and claim a high ball in the box for your first ball in Ligue 1, that was brave. He's got it all and there's no need to worry. PSG has still got a good 'keeper."
