PSG and Valenciennes fought out an entertaining and thrilling 2-2 draw in Week 36 of Ligue 1 at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Clearly tired after their French Cup final extra-time victory over Monaco on Saturday night, Antoine Kombouaré’s men conceded a late draw at home to Valenciennes. Frustratingly, the Parisians were clawed back in the final seconds of the game.
PSG made a bright start to proceedings with Ludovic Giuly (20’), Christophe Jallet (27’) and Sylvain Armand (28’) all testing VA ‘keeper Penneteau. It was club top scorer Mevlut Erding that finally got the break through. So close to scoring in the Cup final, the French-born Turkey international took his first chance of the game. Released by Claude Makelele, he gave Penneteau no chance (1-0, 30’). The capital club’s Cup exertions began to take their toll after the break. Ducourtioux got down the right and crossed for Bong who equalised passed Apoula Edel (1-1, 59’). A draw looked on the cards when Mateja Kezman looked to have given PSG the three points at the second attempt (2-1, 90+2’). Valenciennes, however, didn’t lie down and Ben Khalfallah found the opening with the last kick of the match (2-2, 90+4’).

The Parisians let two points slip as well as a great chance to catch a team ahead of them on the table. The capital club players must now turn their attentions to the two final games against Le Mans and Montpellier, and finish the season on a high note.
