Leonardo: 'An important moment for PSG'
Paris Saint-Germain's new sporting director Leonardo met with French and foreign journalists to discuss all the latest capital club news...
The Lorient loss
"There was a lot of expectation. It was very difficult for the players to get into the game. That's normal. Sometimes the desire to do well inhibits your play. Lorient are a team that play good football. The atmosphere was magnificent, everyone was impatient for this opening game. We lost to a team that played very well."
Antoine Kombouaré
"He had a great season last term, finishing fourth, making the French Cup final, the Coupe de la Ligue semi-final and having a long run in the Europa League. Antoine knows the club well and he knows this is an important moment for Paris Saint-Germain. This is the moment to take a big step forward. That stands for the whole club: coach, the players... everyone."
A big squad
"We have signed some very good players from some big clubs. We've got 24 players in the squad including five who are older than 30 and four youngsters from the academy. That's a normal squad. Six players signed in ten days, but two goalkeepers in Coupet and Edel, plus Makelele, Giuly, Clément, Makonda… all left. The signings are to reinforce the squad. We have worked hard to be competitive in France and the Europa League. That's the aim."
Recruitment finished?
"I think so, yes. But the mercato is still open and certain opportunities may yet present themselves. If a player leaves the club, we're almost obliged to replace them. If there's an opportunity to make a good deal, then we'll look to do it because we're also looking to the future, not just this season. That's why we've signed young players."
The leaders in the squad
"Camara, Armand, Ceara, Douchez and Nene are the elder players. They have acquired a lot of experience and they have to show the way forward. That's a very important responsibility."
The objectives
The objective is to be in the Champions League next season. It's very important, but not vital. The club won't just stop if we don't make it. If PSG is playing in the Champions League, the club will earn more money. That will interest the players and make it easier to attract some big names to the club."
