With just two matches remaining this season, Jérôme Rothen looks back over the campaign and hopes that Les Rouge et Bleu manage to qualify for European football next season...
PSG lost to Auxerre last Saturday. Looking back, how do you analyse that result?“The result is disappointing. The game against Auxerre was a close call and came down to individual errors at the end of the first-half which cost us two goals. From two goals down, it’s not easy to fight back, especially against a team in good form at the moment. It was a bad result, but we didn’t necessarily play badly. Even if the fans were hard on us, we did some good things. But we didn’t earn any points.” The defeat distanced PSG from the qualifying round of next season’s Champions League...
“We had the chance to assure ourselves of this fourth place, which is incredible given everything that’s happened this season, and we’re still in the hunt for that third place. But with Lyon winning last weekend, it’s not going to be easy to finish third. Behind us, the teams are also dropping points, so despite the loss, we’re still almost sure of getting fourth place which bodes well for the remaining two games.”

“Yes, I think fourth place, or even fifth place is almost assured. Even if things go badly, the other teams behind us still need to claim maximum points, which they haven’t done for the last few games. A win against Monaco or Valenciennes means we’re assured of fourth place and given the season as a whole, we deserve to finish in the top five.” On Saturday, against Valenciennes, PSG is one the road for the last time this season. Is this a special match?
“The last match of the season is often a memorable game. That’s not necessarily the case with the last away game. We normally remember the last home match. This season we’re lucky enough to finish at home, and it will be a good match, a good party to end a good season for PSG. Even if we don’t have a trophy to add to the list like last season, I think we’ve all had a good season: the players, the staff and the supporters. Next year we’ll set off for another campaign with some new players and some new staff members. Now’s the time to enjoy these final games together.”
